Shiner Bohemian Black Lager – Meh
Jan 27th, 2008 by Scott Hebert
Uttering disparaging comments about Shiner in this part of Texas is paramount to sacrilege. Be that as it may, I jumped off the Shiner-train a few years ago when I started developing symptoms of a condition known as “The Shiner Sh*ts”.
When I first heard of this malady, I thought it was just a clever joke that a few had made up. The more I researched this problem, the more I found it was fairly wide-spread. My question for the folks at the Spoetzl Brewery has always been this: if you’re beer causes diarrhea in a large enough group of folks, when do you stop assuming this is a problem with the drinker and not the beer?
So, it was with trepidation that I tried the Shiner Bohemian Black Lager. I’ve stumbled across a few other reviews of this beer and they have mostly been positive. From my perspective, the most I can muster is a ‘meh’.
Generally speaking, the beer is well-crafted in terms of delivering a clean, clear taste. Unfortunately, the same can probably be said about Miller Lite. Overall, the flavor of the beer seems uninspired, but I might be completely missing the point (please correct me, if necessary).
I’m still working (slowly) through this six-pack, but I don’t think I’d buy another. There are just too many great, exciting beers out there to spend much time on this one.
But, on the positive side, my digestion seems to be suffering no ill effects!
